Peer-Assisted Writing Sessions (PAWS)

PAWS tutoring hours vary based on the class.

PAWS stands for Peer-Assisted Writing Sessions. Unlike ETC tutors, who are subject-specific, PAWS tutors assist with writing related tasks, such as breaking down prompts, brainstorming, researching, and revising. PAWS tutors are trained to assist students at every stage in the writing process. They are generally only assigned to first-year composition courses.

For additional information about PAWS tutoring,

please call the MCC Learning Center at (559) 675-4846,

PAWS tutors attend class sessions along with students, so they're able to provide students with class-specific support outside of the classroom. They're very familiar with the course content, and because they work directly with the instructor, they also have a solid understanding of all assignment expectations. In this way, PAWS support is more tailored to your individual course than is drop-in tutoring.

Yes, PAWS tutors are available during their drop-in hours at the Learning Center, and for students who're unable to make it to campus, we can also meet in our Virtual Learning Center via Zoom. Our PAWS tutors make every effort to assist a student who needs help, even if that means rearranging their schedule to do it.

Yes, if you have a PAWS tutor embedded in your class, they can help you catch up on things you missed in class, and they can help guide you through assignments. Since they attend class along with you, they can provide course-specific assistance.

PAWS tutors have set drop-in hours outside of class that can be attended by any student in the class, so we do not schedule appointments for PAWS drop-in sessions. They often end up being group sessions. However, our PAWS tutors also work as writing tutors in the Learning Center, so in some cases, it may be possible to schedule a one-on-one appointment with them at a different time. Also, if able, PAWS tutors will often make some extra time to meet with a student who needs help but can't make any of the scheduled drop-in hours.

Yes, PAWS tutors can help you prepare for exams by reviewing course material, explaining difficult concepts, and helping you with study strategies that match your instructor's expectations.
