Madera Community College works closely with community partners, such as the Madera Unified School District and the Madera Adult School, to offer English Second Language classes to the broader Madera community. We also offer higher-level English classes virtually and in-person on the MCC campus. Our aim is to have a tutor embedded in every ESL class. These tutors attend class along with students and hold class-specific drop-in tutoring hours and study sessions.

MCC's ESL tutoring services were originally championed by Nancy Frampton, former ESL program director. In 2019, Nancy reached out to the then-Reading and Writing Coordinator, Matthew Kenerly, and proposed piloting an ESL tutoring initiative, which combined the Learning Center's reading and writing pedagogy with the format of the Learning Center's ETC program. Nancy and Matt collaborated to recruit and train ESL tutors, a first for Madera Community College. Matthew still considers this some of the most meaningful work he's ever done.

Through the years, Nancy has tirelessly worked towards building a support system for both ESL tutors and ESL students. In the spring of 2024, Nancy was an integral part of planning and commissioning ESL tutor training modules that are tailored to our unique student population and their needs. All the tutors love Nancy. She's kind, loving, and wholeheartedly dedicated to her work.

Nancy's unwavering commitment to the ESL program and the success of each student and tutor is a legacy that will not fade with her retirement. Her work has helped shape the ESL tutoring program into a vital resource for students at MCC, one that continues to grow and evolve in line with the needs of the community.

Her retirement, though well-deserved, leaves a significant gap, but her spirit lives on in the work we do each day. We are forever grateful for the foundation she built and the passion she brought to everything she touched. The continued success of the program stands as a tribute to her dedication and love for her students.

As we move forward, we do so with the knowledge that Nancy's influence remains at the heart of our efforts, and we strive to honor her example of tireless devotion, kindness, and a deep commitment to the growth and success of every ESL student.

Many of our ESL tutors are students who've gone through our ESL program, but you don't have to have gone through the program to apply. ESL tutors must have a solid understanding of English grammar and should be familiar with a range of listening, speaking, and reading strategies. While it is not a job requirement, bilingual and multilingual applicants are preferred.
