On Tuesday, April 22, Madera Community College held its first-ever Armenian Genocide Commemoration on campus, marking the 110th anniversary of this chapter in history. The event was organized by Learning Center Coordinator Rocío Solís and History Instructor Dr. Hagop Ohanessian, whose leadership helped bring this important moment of remembrance to life. A special thank you to History Instruction Mr. William Mask and Counselor Ms. Marisa McBride, who served on the planning committee.
The event brought together students, faculty, staff, campus leadership, and members of the community to honor the memory of the Genocide and acknowledge the enduring strength of their descendants.
The program included an educational gallery walk and a keynote address by historian Michael Rettig, titled “Our Journey to Fresno: Remembering the Armenian Genocide.” His talk provided critical historical context and a moving call to remembrance. With over 60 attendees present, the event created space for learning, reflection, and solidarity.
This commemoration marks an important step in MCC’s ongoing efforts to foster awareness, promote historical understanding, and stand firmly against genocide denial. We look forward to continuing this dialogue and strengthening our support for the Armenian community in the years to come.
