Corona Virus Update for MCCC Students

Mar 6, 2020

Dear MCCC Student,

As you have read below and have seen on television, the coronavirus or COVID-19 outbreak is an evolving public health concern.  As Chancellor Oakley has aptly stated, “Public health officials continue to classify the threat posed by COVID-19 as low, but we understand the uncertainty surrounding this outbreak and its tendency to produce some anxiety.”  Both our local and state Chancellor’s Office are relying on the professional assessments of the California Department of Public Health as the primary source of information and guidance on COVID-19 for our system.

We know that many of you may also have growing fears.  Please be reminded that knowledge is power. The threat and risk of exposure is low and there are currently no reported confirmed cases in Fresno and surrounding counties.

The following link provides a robust list of resources and provides update information

CCCO Novel Corona Virus

We ask that you continue to take precautions and know that the College is taking steps to ensure that hand sanitization stations are replenished frequently, soap and paper towels are well maintained in bathrooms, and we have ordered additional tissue, cleaning spray and sanitizing wipes for high traffic areas.  Custodial staff have been provided with additional disinfecting supplies and will be cleaning surfaces more regularly.

With any virus, and especially during the flu season, there are many steps you can take to protect your health and the health of others.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory disease:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Stay at home if you become sick with respiratory symptoms such as fever and cough.
  • Cover your cough/sneeze with your sleeve or a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. These can be located throughout the campus.
  • Avoid sharing drinks, eating utensils, sports equipment, towels and bedding.

We will continue to work with our District and local public health officials and share information as it become available. If you want to stay more update, the Centers for Disease Control has a website that is updated daily on the status of the outbreak as well as updated travel restrictions.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this health concern, please call the Fresno County Department of Public Health Communicable Disease Program at (559)600-3332.
