Strategies for Navigating Challenging Student Situations

Faculty often face challenging student situations ranging from aggression and communication issues to mental health disclosures, homelessness, academic honesty concerns, and students in crisis. This interactive session brings together faculty, counselors, deans, union representatives, the CARE team, and campus support services to build a shared understanding of how to respond effectively and compassionately. Using faculty scenarios, we will work in groups to identify best practices, healthy boundaries, communication strategies, and appropriate referral pathways. Note: Bring your own device. |

This session will explore the role of the college’s constituencies (faculty, classified professionals, students) in reviewing items and providing recommendations. We will distinguish between areas of primary reliance and areas of mutual agreement for the Academic Senate. We will also define helpful terminology such as “collegial consultation” and relevant Education Codes, Title 5 regulations, and local Administrative Regulations. Students, classified professionals, faculty, and administrators are welcome to attend. |

The session examines faculty burnout, exploring how factors such as increasing workload demands and the emotional labor inherent in teaching contribute to professional exhaustion. Attendees will gain insight into the systemic challenges facing higher education professionals and discover evidence-based coping strategies to maintain wellbeing. Through interactive discussion and practical frameworks, participants will develop personalized approaches to managing workplace stress, setting healthy boundaries, and building resilience. This session equips educators with tools to recognize when they or colleagues may be struggling and provides actionable strategies for creating a more sustainable academic career while maintaining passion for teaching and research. |
